Cass County was established in 1828 and named for Governor and Brigadier General Lewis Cass of Michigan. Cass was responsible for negotiating the treaty with the Indians for incorporating the Cass County region into the United States in 1826. Cass County relies on local agriculture with about 85 percent of the county's acreage being employed as farmland.
